Being at home doesn’t have to mean the boredom of doing the same things day in and day out. Here are a few ideas for fun things you and your family can do around the house.
Grab some crayons, colored pencils, or just a couple pens you may have lying around the house. Coloring isn’t just for kids — it can be a relaxing way for adults to spend some time. There are plenty of websites that offer coloring pages to download and print, with everything from cartoon characters to abstract designs.
TV and Movies
It’s all but impossible that you’ve seen every TV show or movie out there. If you’re stuck for something to watch, a quick search can lead you to review sites that list newly available programming, or older shows you might have missed. If you have a particular movie or TV show in mind, sites such as JustWatch can tell you where it’s available for viewing. You might be surprised to find out what’s available for streaming on free services, or on services to which you already subscribe.
Both the cooking and the eating can make a dinner special. Many kids love helping to make dinner, especially if the recipe is easy enough to follow that they can do much of the work themselves. They may even be more interested in trying new foods when they’re the chef.
Even if you just get takeout or delivery, turning dinner into a picnic can be fun, whether the blanket is spread out in the backyard, or on the floor of the living room. Or go the other way and have everyone dress their best and break out the tablecloth for a formal dinner. Another option is putting on costumes to eat, perhaps even with each person playing a character throughout the meal.
A home scavenger hunt doesn’t have to be elaborate. Just pick a few items around your house and yard — either in their usual places or specially hidden — and write riddles or other clues about where to find them. You can even offer a special prize to the winner.
Board and Card Games
Playing a board game or a card game is a great way to spend time as a family. If you’re feeling a bit played out, you can search for variations on your existing board games that other people have created. There are also numerous sites that list games that can be played with a standard deck of playing cards (here’s one example).
If those aren’t satisfying enough, making up your own game could be a fun project. It would include writing the rules, drawing a game board and cards, and even making playing pieces.
